Break Time

I’m incredibly stubborn when it comes to giving myself a break, but today I gave in and I’m giving myself a rest day tomorrow. I need some R&R both physically and mentally.

I started my morning off with a beautiful run in the park. It was pretty painful, though. I need to rest my pulled muscle! Pain definitely isn’t gain. However, I did get some pretty morning views. πŸ™‚

It was worth it, but definitely not my smartest move. My muscles probably hate me! Rest tomorrow!

I ended up missing out on the fun intern dinner because of a stomach ache. I know…pulled muscles, tummy aches, I’m falling apart. πŸ™‚ It’s time to heal!

Keeping up with LIFE

So busy, busy, busy… I need some time to relax and enjoy. This weekend I will do just that!

Tomorrow I’m going out for Indian food (yes, that’s what we decided) with the other GLAM interns. πŸ™‚ It’s such a fun group, so I’m pretty pumped.

I’m dead tired so this post is going to be short and sweet!

I’m trying to eliminate coffee from my diet. I really don’t know if it’s going to work, but I thought I would give it a shot. I had decaf this morning to slowly ween myself off of it. This afternoon I had a really bad headache, which was definitely because of the absence of my afternoon coffee fix. I decided to replace it with this…

Way more refreshing than iced coffee! I think I can do this!

It was a beautiful day in NYC so I took advantage with a light 3-miler in the park.

It really is beautiful. I don’t want to glaze over these moments just because I’m so busy. It’s hard with the long days and I feel like my attitude has been a little sour lately. I need to step back and see the big picture of life again. This is part of the journey and an amazing experience that will always be a part of who I am.

Sometimes I (and I think we all do) get so caught up in the day-to-day grunt tasks that we forget to enrich our lives and see the world as a special place. I know I’m getting really deep here, but it’s true. Not every day is like vacation, but I think that’s the point. We need to take the regular days and try to love them in a different, more unconditional way or else life will pass us by.

These are things I think about daily… well between planning my next workout and meal. πŸ™‚ Wow, that picture really sparked something within me tonight. I hope you enjoyed the little window into my mind. πŸ™‚

Turkey & Bean Stuffed Peppers

An epic meal.

I came back from the gym starving despite my almonds + apple snack beforehand and I whipped up this yummy meal.

I sprayed some olive oil on a pan and roasted the red pepper while I cooked the veggies, kidney beans and… the special ingredient… turkey with spinach and feta.

I added the beans and turkey to the pepper and ate the sautΓ©ed basil cucumbers as a side item.

Hard boiled eggs are going to have to wait for another time when I’m less tired. Work + workout + cooking dinner + cleaning + packing lunch leaves me a little exhausted. Thank goodness for peanut butter packets!

It was an arms lift day.

8-10 reps – 3 sets

  • Barbell bench press
  • Incline barbell bench press
  • Barbell shoulder press
  • Lat pulldowns
  • 50 weighted tricep pulldowns
  • 50 decline pushups on med ball

30 minutes on the rowing machine and 15 on the bike.

Working out after a full workday is so hard. I can’t say it enough! Too bad I’m not an early riser! I prefer relaxing mornings and I always need to get moving around after a long day at work, so evenings it is.

Time to chug some water and attempt to respond to emails and work on Get Fit Get Life. I wish there were more hours in the day! I can’t wait to curl up in bed with my book…

A First for Everything: Hard Boiled Eggs

So, tonight I made my first hard boiled eggs. It’s so simple, yet I fear that I will mess it up! They are for lunch tomorrow! I’m going to pack a peanut butter sandwich in case they didn’t turn out right. πŸ™‚

I also roasted up some peppers and carrots. I had a mission to find “non smelly” veggies at the grocery store. I felt a little self-conscious when I warmed up my broccoli and cauliflower the other day. Office respect! Ha, ha.

I had quite the disaster with my morning berry smoothie today. The berries and kale were NOT mixing, and I was running out of time. I also didn’t want to waste the ingredients, so I… added egg whites and turned it into a berry pancake. Eh. It was a mess, but it was definitely not my typical breakfast. My roommate commented that it smelled like a fruit rollup. This would be a good thing if we weren’t talking about a pancake. πŸ™‚

So, I have been reading about something called intermittent fasting. It is basically scheduled eating. You give yourself a window of time to eat each day and then you are fasting for the rest of it. The goal is to get to a 16/8 schedule. This means 16 hours fasting and 8 hours of eating. You still maintain a healthy diet in the eating period. It says to start with a 12/12 schedule and then work your way toward the 16/8. I think it’s really interesting and I definitely want to look into it more.

The benefits are outlined as follows:

  • Reduced blood glucose and insulin levels (markers of improved health)
  • Increased fatty acid oxidation
  • Maintenance of lean mass (muscle)
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Reduced oxidative damage
  • Increased cellular stress resistance (esp of heart and brain)
  • Decreased risks associated with degenerative diseases of aging (cancers, heart diseases, diabetes, Alzheimers)

This study really differs from the “eat 6 meals a day” plan. It also debunks the theory that you have to eat that often to maintain your metabolic rate.

I think it could be interesting to try out for a week or so. I will have to read more before I make any rash decisions. πŸ™‚

I have been thinking a lot about the meaning of work and what I want in a job. I heard a speaker the other day say, “What would you do if you had a day without any obligations? Figure that out and find a job that replicates that as best as possible. If you are passionate about it, you are going to want to work more, and therefore you will move up quickly.” It’s a recipe for success and happiness.

Pumpkin Overload

Pumpkin is taking over my diet…

… but I kind of like it! A protein pumpkin pancake is like having a big old cookie for breakfast, but it’s healthy!

I used:

  • 1/4 cup egg whites
  • A couple shakes of cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice
  • A sprinkle of rolled oats
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin from the can

I flipped it perfectly this morning! I have never done that in my life. My pancakes usually look pretty haphazard by the time it’s done, but this one actually looked pretty!

I had a little leftover pumpkin so I mixed it with cinnamon and Stevia and popped it in the microwave for 30 seconds. I topped the pancake with this makeshift pumpkin spread and some cinnamon.

I even paused while eating to get a closer picture. Believe me, it took some serious willpower to delay the delicious bites that much longer.

I also whipped up some Almond Butter Banana Breakfast bars for the week…

I think I’m set for the week. πŸ™‚ I divided them up into little “energy bites.” I always want a little something before my workouts, so this will be perfect.

Today I had a Get Fit Get Life team Skype chat. Lots of ideas for the future! The chat inspired me to take the site further. I wish there was more time in the day!

Weekend Shenanigans

I have been cooking like crazy these past few days. CRAZY. Why didn’t I start doing this a long time ago? It’s actually a really creative process. Well, in my case it is because I’m all over the place in the kitchen. I tend to make recipes up as I go a lot. Good or bad? πŸ™‚

I do follow SOME recipes…

Yesterday I made fANNEtastic food‘s black bean and pumpkin veggie burgers. I really like her recipes because they are quick and easy.

In the making…

Finished! Black bean/pumpkin burger, blueberry crisp, and cinnamon roasted carrots and sweet potato fries! I literally just took the veggies out of the freezer, greased a pan, sprinkled the veggies with cinnamon, and popped them in the oven for 20 minutes. Not bad! The blueberry crisp is made with blueberries, rolled oats, cinnamon and Stevia.

Yesterday was another weight lifting day! I haven’t been this sore in a LONG time.

8-10 reps each

4 sets barbell incline press

3 sets dumbbell flat press

3 sets dumbbell incline fly

4 sets reverse lat pulldown

3 sets one-arm dumbbell row

3 sets dumbbell pullover

3 sets cable weighted crunch

Holy yum. Now that’s how you start a Saturday.

I did an interval run earlier and it was PAINFUL. A pulled glute is one of the less enjoyable things in life.

I read some Fifty Shades DARKER. These books are interesting. To be honest, I couldn’t stop after the first book because it had such a bummer ending, so I had to continue. Not fair.

Today I went to the farmer’s market in Brooklyn with my friend. So much awesome-ness.

I got spicy corn relish. I plan to put it on veggie burgers and eggs, but I’m sure I will find something much weirder to top it with while cooking.

Prospect Park is really pretty.

These trees remind me of the Hunger Games. Ha ha. Seriously. Doesn’t it look like a fun tree to climb and just chill up there?

Bare Burgers

Totally exhausted. Good week, but a long one.

So, my blender is 3 days old, and it broke this morning. UGH. No smoothies in the morning! I’m planning on some spinach, egg whites and an apple.

Today was a rest day and it felt great. My legs feel like Jell-O!

I went to Bare Burger my brother and some friends tonight. Organic burgers = no complaints! I went with the turkey burger on greens.

Time for some 50 Shades of Grey reading then SLEEP.

Delicate Few

I need more than a delicate few. I guess I’m taking my “delicate few” moments to write this lovely blog post.

I hit the weights tonight for a lower body leg session.

This included:

{8-10 reps each}

  • 4 sets of barbell squats
  • 3 sets of leg extensions
  • 3 sets dumbbell lunges with kick at the top
  • 3 sets dumbbell deadlifts
  • 3 sets lying leg curls
  • 3 sets standing calf raises
  • 3 sets squats with heavier weights than the first sets (just to kick my butt a little bit more)

20 minutes light rowing and 10 minutes elliptical (So boring)

I actually discovered you can close your eyes on both machines and catch a little bit of sleep. However, I don’t advise or endorse this. πŸ™‚

BB Crisp Remix

I just whipped up some blueberry crisp! What’s new? But, there is a little bit of a remix this time.

I just used blueberries, oats, cinnamon and Stevia and baked it at 300 degrees for about 45 minutes. I haven’t tasted it yet, but I’ll let you know the results tomorrow. This is definitely going to be a hit or miss!

I had some fun with Pinterest tonight. Here are some things I would like to do in my lifetime…

Looks like I’ve got my work cut out for me! FUN work, that is.

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about career routes and what I’m going to do after graduation. My days are filled with lots of work, and I really want to step back and view it all from a different perspective. Life isn’t necessarily about endpoints. I am so hyper focused on endpoints that I feel like I’m missing out on there here and now. Sometimes I have a hard time with this because I am very determined, but there is a healthy limit that I seem to go above.

It just clicked for me tonight. Whatever path I’m on, or will be in the future, is just part of my journey in life. It’s the memories that I make along the way that make up the meat of life. Yes, goals are important and reaching goals is wonderful, but there has to be a balance. You also can’t miss the point of it all. Life to is explore and enjoy as much as possible. For me, that balance is a little off right now. Part of the problem is a lack of time, but honestly, time is always an issue in life. You just have to find a sneaky way around it or you will be waiting forever.

I want the most out of every single day. I’m not going to pressure myself about the endpoints. I’m going to take it all in…

Easier said than done, for me, but here goes nothin’

The Power of a Protein Shake

Wow… Happy EOD Monday! Whooo hoo.

This weekend was full of family fun! Today was definitely back to work. The rest of the weekend was super relaxing. My mom and I went to a french bakery for lunch and I got the 6-veggie quiche. Then we took a stroll through Washington Square Park and admired all of the pretty flowers. Seriously, it’s genetic.

It was a wonderful, much needed afternoon.

Today I whipped up a protein shake for breakfast.

-Egg white protein powder

-1/2 cup almond milk

-frozen chopped kale

-1/2 cup blueberries

-1/2 frozen banana

It was awesome! Perfect way to start the day. My dad knows his protein shakes. Although, he thought the kale was a gross addition. You just can’t taste it, so you might as well pack some veggies in. I also sipped on some HOT coffee. That’s a first for me. Iced coffee is my thang.

I have been getting super hungry at work, but not today! I made mini snacks to have every three hours and I can’t tell you how much better I felt.

So breakfast was at about 8 a.m. and then I had a Greek yogurt and an apple around 11 a.m. I waited until about 2 p.m. and had coffee (iced), some carrots, little bit of pumpkin, and a mini almond butter “sandwich” on flax crackers. Around 5 p.m. I had some almonds and an apple. When I got home from work I had some blueberries and kale chips pre-workout. It worked out so well! I felt better and didn’t get one headache. Mini meals are the way to go!

My workout was weight intensive. I’m really working to lift more because I’m pretty bored of all of the cardio. Don’t get me wrong, I will still include cardio, but I want to change it up a little bit.

Today I did arms:

I did 8-10 reps of each.

Dumbbell shoulder press – 4 sets

Upright Row – 3 sets

Dumbbell rear delt raise – 3 sets

One arm curl – 3 sets

Barbell curl – 4 sets

Dumbbell concentration curl – 3 sets

Dumbbel triceps kickbacks – 3 sets

One-arm triceps extension – 3 sets

One-arm reverse pushdown – 4 sets

I finished the workout up with 20 minutes on the rowing machine and 10 on the elliptical. I was ready to get out of there! It’s a super long day with work and my workout back to back. I need rest!

Dinner was a salmon burger (so easy to grill up), and some roasted broccoli from Whole Foods. I love prepared foods. They save me every time!

I was going to post the pic of my dinner, but once again it did not look appetizing. I swear the food tastes better than it looks. πŸ™‚

Good news – my pulled glute is feeling a lot better (in case you were wondering), haha. πŸ™‚
