Things You Should Know!

… and the trail runs continue! Every single day since I got home. 🙂 I need to get my fix while I can!

I finished The Hunger Games today. Amazing book! I’m a few months late, but better late than never! I want to start on the second one soon. Katniss is so BA. I think every girl could learn a thing or two from her independence and strength. It’s so nice to have time to explore some books I have been wanting to read… which leads me to my new read: Thirty Things Every Woman Should Have and Should Know By The Time She’s 30. It’s by the editors of Glamour and Pamela Redmond Satran. It started out as a simple list for Glamour and it spread across the internet like wildfire. Glamour and Satran decided to elaborate on each of the rules in a book featuring powerful women. I’ll highlight the nuggets for you here!

#1 One old boyfriend you can imagine going back to and one who reminds you of how far you’ve come.

Love should almost never make you cry. If you’ve sobbed or had too many drinks or felt your stomach knot up over a guy more than once for every month you’ve been together, this is not the love you were meant to have. Thank him for the lessons and move on. -Genevieve Field

#2 A decent piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in your family.

I loved that chair. I wanted that chair. It was less like the old me and everything like the person I wanted to become: a person comfortable enough in her own life to sit and stay awhile. -Sloane Crosley

#3 Something perfect to wear if the employer or man of your dreams wants to see you in an hour.

A go-to dress. It doesn’t have to be a little black dress. It’s even better sometimes if it’s not, because color makes a bolder statement. But it should fit perfectly and make you feel beautiful. -Anne Christensen

#5 A youth you’re content to move beyond.

I found two gems on this one. 🙂

Most of us fear that in growing old, we’ll become a shell of ourselves. But, of course, it’s the youthful versions of ourselves that are our shells; we must leave them behind like a snakeskin. We must grow out of ourselves to grow beyond our old limits, or else risk being suffocated by the sediment of our own history. -ZZ Packer

I now believe in growing gratefully, not gracefully. I haven’t found the secret to life, or love, or eternal youth. But I do know now that youth is not the blossom but the bud, and that though one cannot always be young and wild, if you are willing to learn, to grow, to outrun the mileposts of your own wildest dreams, you can always be winsome and lucky, lovely and free. -ZZ Packer

What 30 means to me {Taylor Swift}

Having no deadlines for love or anything else.

It’s rare that I have a boyfriend–that only happens if I fall in love. I’ve noticed that people who are never in a relationship just to be in a relationship keep their childlike spark because they don’t end up settling for things that make them unhappy, and they never feel as if they took less than what was out there for them. So for me, being single is what I do, and falling in love is the exception. -Taylor Swift

…to be continued as I read more!

Now for recent eats:

Spinach salad with cherry tomatoes, mozzarella balls, parmesan and chicken. Raspberry shake with frozen berries, almond milk and almond butter with psyllium husk on top. A little protein heavy, but I have been swimming and running a lot so it was needed!

Weekly Finds:

1. Sparkling water. It’s way more entertaining to drink than the usual H20.

2. Garmin watch. You can run anywhere and it keeps your mileage, split times and pace.

3. Coconut and almond milk blend. It’s new! A mix of coconuts and almonds. You definitely have to like coconut to enjoy the taste.

4. Moroccan argan oil. I scrunch my hair with it post-shower and it keeps it silky and wavy.

5. “Where Have You Been” by Rihanna. Awesome running song!

Happy Sunday night!

Trail Running & Grilled Pizza

I have missed nature SO much. Central Park just doesn’t compare with trail runs. There is something about running on the quiet trails nestled between streams of water that lead you on rugged paths that can’t be beat. I could run on those trails for hours. There is nothing better than running outside in beautiful weather. Well, maybe a big piece of carrot cake. 😉 Now if you have both, that’s perfection.

Everything always seems right when I’m trail running. I think it’s because I feel so calm knowing that running is the only thing I will focus on at that time. To me, the moments when I am running on a quiet trail, are the ones that I feel truly alive. It’s when I know that I am living life to the fullest because it’s peaceful and I can appreciate the simple things.

I’m addicted! 🙂

And some good eats to refuel after a couple nine-milers…

Salmon salad. Yum! A bed of greens topped with grilled salmon, coconut flakes, sunflower seeds, cranberries, feta cheese and balsamic vinaigrette! A cream soda Stevia soda to top it off. 🙂

It isn’t true summer time without grilled pizza.

It was topped with mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and basil. I had some grilled brussels sprouts, my beloved Stevia cream soda and homemade blueberry crisp as well. The blueberry crisp is made with oats, blueberries, honey and flour. Sooo delicious.

Life is good. 🙂

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

It has been a pretty good week. I’m in the “wrapping things up” phase right now. Next week is my last week as an intern at Parents magazine. I’m truly sad about it. It has been such a wonderful experience for me and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I learned SO much about the behind-the-scenes aspect of magazines, made amazing connections with the staff and grew up a lot. It feels like home now and it’s going to be strange leaving. On to the next adventure: Glamour magazine. 🙂

A lot of people ask me if I regret “missing out” on a semester of college, and my answer is always, “no freaking way, because I didn’t miss out.” I hate thinking about things that way. I didn’t miss out, I traded it for another rich experience. It’s all in your perspective. Interning at a major magazine in college is not an opportunity you pass up if you want a career in the industry! You have to go after what you want in this world and that means pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.

And now for the weekly finds…

1. Cinnamon. I put it on everything from yogurt to salmon. I’m not even kidding about the salmon. Maybe I’m weird, but it gives grilled salmon a touch of delicacy. Try it! Plus, it keeps your blood sugar in check.

2. HIIT runs. 30 minutes and you are off the treadmill. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE running outside, but the treadmill is so boring. It kills my running vibe. So, with this workout you get on and off quickly. I usually warm up for 5 minutes at 6.0. Then I do 5-minute shifts of HIIT. I go anywhere from a 10.0-11.0 pace for 20 seconds, take 10 seconds off, and then hit the sprint again. I keep this up for 5 minutes and then take it easy for 5 minutes at a 7.0 pace. I do three rounds of 5-minute HIITS with 2 break rounds in between for a 30 minute workout. Studies have found that HIIT workouts are more effective for your body than an hour long jog. I personally think mixing it up is the best combo, but after you try a HIIT workout, you will know why it’s so effective.

3. Yogurt bowls. Seriously, this could very well be my favorite meal. I get a Greek yogurt, Justin’s almond butter packet, cup of oats, banana, handful of chocolate chips and then mix it all together. YUM!

4. My new kicks. Best. running. shoes. ever.

5. Pushups. I know they suck, but they are the most effective exercise. If there is one thing that I have found out about exercise over the years, it’s that the movements you hate are the ones that will transform your body. Cut out the moves that don’t push your body and focus on the ones, like pushups, that bring you to the next level.

Time to get back to studying for finals. Yippee.

Remember…
