Hey, hey!

I thought I would share something that I found out about yesterday: The Lost Girls! I am completely inspired by these ladies. The Lost Girls are three women from NYC (two were magazine editors) who quit their jobs and took a year off from work to travel. They were tired of the rat race and wanted to take a break to get their life perspective more in check.

Here is a little information about the book they wrote documenting their experiences:

With their 28th birthdays looming, three friends quickly rocketing towards management positions, mortgages, and marriages, all share a similar fear:ย Is this what they want, or what they think they should want?

Feeling in serious need of perspective, they decide to leave it all behind, quit their jobs, and begin an epic search for meaning and enlightenment. Traveling 60,000 miles around the world, from the mountains and jungles of South America to the beaches of Australia, passing through Kenya, India, Southeast Asia, and New Zealand along the way, the trio will not only find themselves, but a lifelong friendship.

I really think that most people have a deeper side to them that yearns for a greater adventure, an awe-inspiring experience, and something more in life. I know that I am restless and I have so many goals that I want to achieve, people I want to meet, and places I want to explore. The world is such an amazing place when you really stop to admire it. I think it’s so easy to become confined in everyday routines and forget to really live and drink in life experience. I love how these women brought that problem to the forefront. They recognized it in their own lives and did something about it. I want to make the most out of my life and I love people that inspire me to do just that.

Chocolate-y Desserts & Pocket Perspective

You know when you have the feeling that you are just due for a chocolate indulgence? That was me last night! So, naturally I cured that with a mini chocolate milkshake and fudge-y cake with a dark chocolate center. Few things are better in life than a good piece of chocolate cake. Treating yourself to a sweet is one of the finer parts of life and it IS part of a healthy lifestyle. I went to Max Brenner’sย with my friends and we did it up.

I felt a close-up shot was truly necessary.

I balanced this with some healthy eats in the past few days. I have also been spinning for most of my cardio works, but I mixed in a running day and it felt great. Variety really is key.

beet & cucumber.

I have been thinking a lot about living every day with a positive and open attitude. I think that I have been reminded about the value of life with the shootings in Colorado and the visit to the 9/11 Memorial. Life really is so fragile and it truly is a wonderful miracle to be alive and healthy. I am so appreciative of the opportunity to explore the world and enjoy each day. It’s obviously not always perfect, but the essence of life is so powerful. I want to keep this perspective with me and take it with me throughout the rest of my life. I’ve got it pocketed and I want to use it as a tool to make the most out of every single day that I get in this crazy life. I know this is deep, but it’s important stuff that people tend to shy away from talking about in daily life. This is silly because it is so close to the core of humanity. YOU are the engineer of your own life. YOU are responsible for pushing yourself to answer these life questions.

Make it happen forย no one else, but yourself.

Got kale chips?

Kale chips are the best mindless munching food ever. The ingredients are good for you, they taste good, and they are low in calories.

One of my favorite brands is Brad’s Raw Chips. They come in naked, nasty hot, natural nacho and vampire killer. I really like the “leafy” kale. It’s such a good thing to have on hand!

Usually, if I know that I will be going out for the night I will buy some kale chips and have them for when I get back and feel like munching. That way I won’t be tempted to get into something that is worse for me!

I’m starting to take a risk on a daily basis. Life is all about testing the limits and so I am making a pact with myself to do one thing every day that pushes me out of my comfort zone.

Oldies

You know what song will never get old?

Will NEVER get old. I love oldies music because it’s simple, happy and reminds me of my childhood. It’s amazing how music can transport you back to a different phase of life.

So, along with jamming to feel-good music, I have been planning my workout for tomorrow morning.

Spin class and leg weights!

  • Barbell squats
  • Deadlift
  • 100 calisthenics
  • 500 ab exercises

My little brother gave me my weight lifting routine. It’s great! I do legs Mondays and Fridays and arms Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Lately I have been going with roasted pepper dinners. I get home from work, cut a red pepper open, throw it in the oven at 400 degrees and keep it there for about 20 minutes. Then you can sautรฉ veggies and protein to put in the pepper. Bon appetite!

Side note: Now listening to She’s a Lady by Tom Jones [the fun just doesn’t stop over here!]

If you haven’t put a frozen banana in Greek yogurt with dark chocolate and almond butter for breakfast, you haven’t lived. Try it tomorrow morning!

Busy Days and Happy Hour

Today has been nonstop! I love the busy days. Also, I know I talked about how I didn’t think morning workouts were the way to go (for me), but I am totally taking that back. I have been hitting the spin classes/weights before work every day and I love it. I feel energized and ready for the day and I don’t have to exercise when I am out of steam and tired from the day. My addiction to spinning just keeps continuing.

So my days are filled with a morning workout and work for 8-9 hours. I was in bed by 9 last night! Tonight I went to a happy hour for some magazine networking with some of the other Glamour interns. So much fun! I’m so lucky to have such a good group of girls to intern with this summer.

I went to Whole Foods on the way home!

Grocery list:

  • Deli turkey
  • Deli chicken
  • Raspberries
  • Apples
  • Greek yogurt
  • Dark chocolate
  • Beef skewer (for dinner!)
  • Carrots

Pretty basic. I always need all of those foods so it never goes to waste. I had to have dinner at 10 tonight which I hate doing, but hey, ya gotta live life. I have been struggling to squeeze in everything, but I need to work on Get Fit Get Life. I wish I had more time in the day!

So, I sit 8-9 hours a day. I get up to go to the bathroom, food, etc, but that’s not very much. Apparently if you sit for fewer than 3 hours a day, you can add 2 years to your life. Read more about it here. Boo! Oh well, you can’t win them all!

Awesome weekend. NYC has really started to grow on me and I know I will miss the excitement and energy of the city. I may just have to come back. ๐Ÿ™‚

Spinning classes and weights have been my workout sessions of choice. I’m really liking spinning over running. I don’t know if I’ll go back to the long runs. I have found lots of other fun alternatives since pulling my back/glute muscles. I like the vibe of cycling and the music keeps me pumped for the entire workout. I think I’m addicted! Maybe I’ll try to get spin certified?

After my workout I hit up Juice Generation for a Protein Buzz. This time I got hemp protein instead of whey. I couldn’t really taste any difference to be honest, but it was still amazing.

Blueberries, hemp protein, almond milk and a banana! Yum.

Last night I went to a dinner with some friends and had Scottish Salmon…

Today I relaxed and read 50 Shades Darker in the park. It’s not really capturing my interest, but maybe I just haven’t had enough time to read lately.

In other news, I’m off the coffee bandwagon! I have had one iced coffee in the past few weeks. I don’t crave it anymore, which is great! I have saved a lot of money and my stomach just feels better all of the time. I think the body does best without the acidic drink, but life is too short to not enjoy in moderation. If I want a coffee, I’ll get myself one, but it’s just not a daily habit anymore. I have also eliminated most alternative sugars out of my diet (I still drink the occasional Diet Dr. Pepper). I only have it when I’m really craving it. It’s crazy to see what the elimination of just two beverages can do to your body/mood, etc.

With that being said, I don’t stay up as late anymore. Time to sleep. Good night!

Catchup

This has been a less than traditional week, so I seem to have gotten off track with my bloggin’.

I have been lifting weights 4 days a week and doing cardio pretty much every day. It’s easy to do when I’ve got fun spin classes to go to! I definitely think that gym memberships are worth it. It just makes things more fun!

Latest meals:

Berry Smoothies complete with vanilla protein powder, raspberries, blueberries and almond milk. Sometimes I stick in a piece of dark chocolate. ๐Ÿ™‚

PB Tofu… Of course! Baked tofu, PB, and soy sauce. Easy peasy!

Yogurt bowl of goodness. PB, frozen banana, puffed kamut, cinnamon. Sometimes I throw in some fresh pumpkin. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have been SO tired lately. Don’t know what my deal is these days! Maybe the weight lifting? I need to make sure I’m getting enough shuteye. I can’t believe I go home in one month to Kansas. All I have to say is that this experience has been one heck of a ride. I have grown up in so many ways and learned how to handle myself in many different situations. Wouldn’t trade it for the world! It’s safe to say that NYC has toughened me up (in a good way, I hope!)

PB Baked Tofu

It’s a short week! Oh yeahhh!

I went to an early spin class plus weights this morning. I felt really energized all day and it was nice not to have to rush to the gym post-work day. Not a bad way to start the (short) week.

Tonight’s menu was a a banana almond bite, milk, apple, PB Baked Tofu (a spin off of Fannetastic Food’s Almond Baked Tofu) and a bite of the Pumpkin Spice cookies I made the other day. YUM.

The PB Baked Tofu wasn’t the most photogenic meal and you can awkwardly see a little bit of the pumpkin spice cookie, but alas, it’s a foodie pic.

It was delicious and it reminded me of PB toast.

Picture Perfect Weekend

Happy July! It has been a wonderful weekend and the 4th is on Wednesday! Life’s good. I plan to watch fireworks by the Hudson River while eating a burger. It’s not my usual family BBQ & fireworks, but it’s going to have to suffice this year.

Yesterday I made Pumpkin Spice cookies from Carrots ‘N’ Cake. I ended up switching out the butter for apple sauce and made them into bars! I like being able to pack small sweet treats in my lunch.

Yesterday afternoon I read Fifty Shades Darker in Washington Sq. Park. It was perfect. I just set out a blanket and chilled. Fifty Shades Darker is OK. I’m taking my time reading it so it’s definitely not the most suspenseful of books.

Up close and personal.

Last night my friend and I went to a benefit concert in Brooklyn. It was African music and it was SO fun. I love Africa’s culture because it’s so rich and full of life. One of the singers said something that really inspired me. “Celebrate the joy of your life every single day. Don’t let the doubts overshadow those joys. Remember the happy moments and let those take over the sad ones.” It was just an upbeat experience in general. Lots of culture, dancing and music.

I recorded some of the music, but you can’t hear it for some reason. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Bummer.

I worked a bunch on Get Fit Get Life. There is now a tumblr! GFGL also has a video posted to the site. Lots of exciting changes! T-shirts coming soon. ๐Ÿ™‚

This morning I did arm weights plus and another spin class followed by a Juice Generation refuel. I got the Protein Buzz: whey, almond milk, blueberries, banana. YUM! I also had a bite of Pumpkin Ginger cookie and asparagus. Random meal!

This afternoon has been filled with soccer watching and shopping. Time to relax.

The Last Days of June!

AH, can you believe it’s the last day of June? Damn! Time flies. I bought a month at NYC Sports Club. I’m a happy girl! This morning I lifted weights and cycled. Yay!

Pre-workout fuel:

Waffle w/ PB and pumpkin and some fresh grapes!

Workout:

  • 3 sets barbell squats
  • 3 barbell deadlifts
  • 50 DB weighted squats
  • 50 weighted lunges
  • 500 ab exercises (mix of med ball olibques, lower ab kicks, med ball crunches, knee raises)
  • and a SPIN class!

Refuel:

Steak + asparagus

I also had some berries with Kamut, a couple licorice bites and some PB. Quite an assortment of tastes!

Also, I just have to say that I had the best breakfast Friday morning. Puffed kamut, Greek yogurt, 1/2 a frozen banana, dark chocolate, PB and pumpkin. It was more of a dessert honestly, but a healthy one at that!

I’m slowly weening myself off of coffee and artificial ingredients of any kind. It’s so hard because literally every product has some chemical additive. I just want to see if it makes a difference in how I feel on a daily basis. We shall see!

Time to work on Get Fit Get Life. I’ve got my work cut out for me! I’m going to make Pumpkin Spice cookies this afternoon as well. ๐Ÿ™‚
